With James Valentine as MC, Live at the Village presents a Festival of exhilarating and vibrant live music to Springwood on 27 August 2022 in partnership with Blue Mountains Theatre. A program of contemporary, genre-straddling performances from acclaimed and world-class Australian artists, including jazz icon, Sandy Evans, ARIA-nominated Zela Margossian Quintet, world music fusionists Mara! Big Band, and Bluegrass darlings the Morrisons.
“Musicians know it’s an even more intimate and shared journey when you travel this way, as a shared experience, through live music.”– Gary Daley, Creative Director.
Devi Mamak and the Caravan Band will be performing original classical, jazz and world fusion compositions and arrangements which will be mirrored in the movements of dance troupe Caravan Dance Company (formerly Ghawazi Caravan). This unique show finally combines local artist Devi Mamak’s 25-year dual careers as composer, pianist and bandleader as well as world-renowned dance and fusion belly dance troupe director.
Sydney’s much-loved bluegrass darlings The Morrisons tell Australian stories, steeped in the sound of folk and old-time music.
As an innovative soloist, Keyna Wilkins is a pioneering Australian/British composer-musician. Keyna explores stream-of-consciousness improvisations alongside her composed pieces, often using loop pedal and visual projections, inspired by contemporary human rights issues, astronomical phenomena and thoughts. For this performance, Keyna will be joined by improvising jazz drummer Shane Carpini.
The Mara! Big Band, a 12-piece version of dual ARIA winning Mara! Band, performs new work: Zashto? – setting poetry by Australian migrant and refugee poets to music from five composers and band members, telling stories of displacement, hope, longing, despair and resignation, in search of a dream.
Steeped in the ancient and beguiling music of the Shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo flute, these master improvisers, Simon Barker and Bronwyn Kirkpatrick, will take you on an exotic and unforgettable musical journey.
ARIA-nominated Zela Margossian Quintet creates an exotic musical atmosphere, performing original works in ethno-jazz, carrying influences from Armenian music, that takes audiences on a pleasurable, emotive journey.
Created and directed by ARIA winning saxophonist, Sandy Evans, Ahimsa fuses jazz, Hindustani and Carnatic chant with contemporary electronic sounds, in a musical response to Gandhi’s writings on Ahimsa (non-violence).
